What is the Indonesian currency?
This information is necessary for you to know about the currency or money that we use in Indonesia as a legal tender for all debts, public and private. In Indonesia we use the currency that we use is call ‘RUPIAH’ (Rp). But for daily transaction other currencies are can be use base on the recent exchange. Many other currencies can be accepted to change in array authorized money changers in Bali. The most foreign currencies can be use in Bali such as; US Dollars, Australian Dollars, Singaporean Dollars, Malaysian Ringgit, Japanese Yen, EURO, etc…

How are the Indonesian ‘RUPIAH’ looks like?
The Indonesian Rupiahs (Rp) more less are similar to other country’s currencies; the Bank note is a paper money and coins. Here how they are looks like:


The Bank note above is says Rp. 100.000 (a hundred thousands). It’s has 5 zeros that the three from the back is always says for a thousand, the color is dominate with red and pink. On the front face is the picture of Mr. Soekarno and Mr. Hatta the Indonesian Independence proclamator and also as our first President and Vice President, with the Garuda bird as the symbol of Indonesia; and the other side is the picture of the Parliament Building. This amount of Rupiahs (Rp) is pretty much equal to US$ 10

This note says 50.000 (fifty thousands) Rupiahs. It has 4 zeros that the three from the back is says the thousand. The color is dominant blue. The front side is the picture of
I Gusti Ngurah Rai, he is one of the Balinese Patriot when the Second World War and also the Garuda Bird on the right above corner as the symbol of Indonesia. The other side is the picture of the Ulundanu Temple on Lake Beratan, Bedugul one of the best tourist destination in Bali. The Rp. 50.000 is closely equal to US$ 5

The Bank Note above says Rp. 20.000 (twenty thousands). It has 4 zeros as the three zeros from the back tell you the thousand. The dominant color is green; the front side is the picture of Mr. Oto Iskandar Di Nata one of National Patriot with the Garuda Bird on the right above corner. The other side is the picture of the ‘tea leafs pickers’ as Indonesia is famous with spices, coffee, tea, herbs and etc. The Rp. 20.000 is closely equal to US$ 2

The above amount is Rp. 10.000 (ten thousands). The dominant color is purple with the picture of Mr. Sulta Mahmud Badaruddin II is also one of the National Patriot from Sumatera Island and Garuda Bird on the right above corner; the other side is the picture of ‘Rumah Limas’ one of the traditional house architecture. The Rp. 10.000 is always says as the US$ 1

The amount is Rp. 5000 (five thousands), the dominant color is light brown. The front face is the picture of Mr. Tuanku Imam Bonjol another National Patriot from Sumatera Island and Garuda Bird on the right above corner. The other side is the picture of Sumateran Hand Weaver Lady wearing West Sumateran dress. The Rp. 5000 amount is says as the US 50 Cents

The note above is Rp. 1000 (one thousand) the dominant color is mix of light blue and green. The front side is the picture of Mr. Kapitan Patimura, he was also one of the National Patriot from Maluku Island, east Indonesia and Garuda Bird as the symbol of Indonesia. The other side is the picture of Maitara Island and Tidore Island overlooked from the ocean in East of Indonesia just nearby Maluku Island. The Rp. 1000 is always called the US 10 Cents.

Note:

  • Please be attention to the Bank note of Rp. 100.000 and Rp. 10.000, they look similar, and to avoid a mistake when you do transaction.
  • Make sure to do double check before you leave the money changer to ensure you get the correct amount.
  • Make sure you come to the authorized money changer with exact rates offered.
  • ATM card may help you much to control your cash flow.
